5 Compelling Reasons to Eat Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables

Clare Adshead-Grant • 16 September 2023

Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season is not only a delicious choice but  a smart and sustainable one.  Here's 5 of our reasons why you should choose to eat fruit and vegetables that are in season.

1. Superior taste and Quality

When fruits and vegetables are in season, they are at their peak of flavour and nutritional value. Produce that's allowed to ripen naturally on the vine or tree tends to be sweeter, juicier, and more vibrant in colour compared to those picked prematurely or transported over long distances. For instance, British strawberries in the summer burst with sweetness that's unmatched by their off-season counterparts. Enjoying seasonal produce is like tasting nature at its best.

2. Better nutritional value

Seasonal fruits and vegetables not only taste better but also pack a more significant nutritional punch. They are harvested at the right time, which ensures that they contain higher levels of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system, boosting energy levels, and protecting against chronic diseases. For instance, autumnal British apples are not only crisper but also loaded with vitamins and fibre, making them a perfect choice for a healthy snack.

3. Supporting British farmers and producers

Choosing seasonal produce supports local farmers and the UK's agricultural economy. When you buy what's in season, you're investing in your community and helping to sustain local farming traditions. This support is especially vital in the face of global agricultural challenges and disruptions. We try to source British originated fruit and vegetables as far as we can.

4. Environmental benefits

Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables reduces the environmental impact of your food choices. When produce is in season locally, it doesn't require long-distance transportation or energy-intensive storage methods. This means fewer greenhouse gas emissions and a smaller carbon footprint. Additionally, seasonal farming practices often rely less on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, benefiting the environment and promoting healthier ecosystems.

5. Cost-efficient

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are usually more affordable than their out-of-season counterparts. When produce is abundant, its price tends to drop, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious shoppers. Additionally, you can take advantage of bulk purchases and preserve seasonal fruits and vegetables for later use by freezing, canning, or making preserves. This not only saves money but also allows you to enjoy your favourite seasonal flavours year-round.

On the first of every month, we publish a blog on what is currently in season in the UK.  We try our hardest to source as much of it as possible.  However, if you see that we haven't got something, ask us about it. Sometimes we don't stock a particular product because the growing conditions haven't been optimal for it and therefore it isn't of good enough quality.  Also, sometimes we don't get the seasonal products when they first appear at the market because the prices are too high - we wait until there's more availability and the price has come down!
